Chicago’s very own Chance the Rapper continued to pay it forward while celebrating his 29th birthday last weekend. Bypassing parties and gifts, Chance instead headlined a meal give-away on the city’s South Side.
The record producer, singer and rapper posted an Instagram video that showcased the give-away at the Discover Customer Care Center and featured a Chance-mascot dancer. At least 1,500 free meals were distributed to the community. The “No Problem” musician also worked with volunteers to give away containers of his signature “Mint Chocolate Chance” Ben and Jerry’s ice cream.
Chance, whose real name is Chancelor Bennett, has successfully created a personal brand that has become well known for philanthropy, particularly in his native Chicago. In 2016, he created the non-profit organization SocialWorks, which was founded in support of Chicago Public Schools. SocialWorks raises money for social issues that impact Chicago’s youth, such as education, homelessness, and mental health. The organization is committed to creating spaces and raising awareness of Chicago’s artistic community.
If you have a desire to give back to your community, consider meeting with local nonprofits that are focused on your area of interest. Volunteer to create or support an event to raise funds for their organization. Giving back doesn’t take a lot of money. But it does take passion, focus and a plan. Take and post photos of the event on your social channels. Tag @chancetherapper to let him know how much his commitment to philanthropy has inspired you. You may not get a response, but taking the chance to connect with Chance is worth it! Your personal brand will thank you.
